What is it?
Coconut jam, or better known as Kaya in Southeast Asia, is a type of food spread made of coconut milk, eggs and sugar. Its texture is much softer than a regular jam and its consistency is similar to a chocolate fondue with added milk.
The name “Kaya” translates to “rich” in Malay and is thusly named due to its golden color. Depending on the type of coconut jam, the color may differ from a dark golden brown to a more greenish tinge as screwpine leaves and/or extract is added as an additional flavoring which results in the green color.
